Using advanced dynamic thermal simulations with the DesignBuilder tool, we assessed the building’s performance under real climate and usage conditions. The study identified critical zones with overheating risks—such as corridors and waiting areas—and evaluated passive strategies to improve comfort without increasing energy demand.

Solutions explored included improved glazing, natural ventilation in the central atrium, and cooled supply air. The combination of these measures led to a significant improvement in thermal comfort, with temperature reductions of up to 9 °C in the most affected areas.

Our work helped optimize both the envelope design and the HVAC strategy, while also simplifying construction logistics through a unified glazing specification across the building.

This project highlights how rigorous analysis and simulation tools can deliver effective, sustainable solutions in complex environments like healthcare facilities.

The new Pavelló Illa, located in the heart of Barcelona’s Les Corts district, is a sports facility promoted by BIMSA that combines contemporary architecture, urban integration, and special attention to user comfort. The project, by Anna Noguera Arquitectura & AIA Arquitectura, is characterised by a light volume wrapped in a green façade and translucent polycarbonate panels that function as a bioclimatic filter and a visual landmark.

Praxis developed a full thermal and energy simulation study using DesignBuilder–EnergyPlus, modelling the building’s dynamic behaviour throughout the year. The scope included a bioclimatic design study, assessment of the thermal envelope, detailed modelling of natural ventilation and daylighting, as well as advanced simulations of thermal comfort and summer behaviour in the two main sports courts.

One of the project’s critical aspects was ensuring comfort in a large-volume, high‑use building without resorting to oversized mechanical solutions. To achieve this, natural ventilation strategies were studied in depth, including pressure‑driven flow and stack effect between façade and roof openings. Simulations showed that, especially in one of the sports halls, average rates of up to 2.7 air changes per hour could be achieved in summer, significantly reducing overheating risk.

The thermal impact of the green façade was also evaluated, modelling its monthly light transmission factor and its contribution to seasonal shading. Additional solar protection strategies were analysed, such as vertical and horizontal louvres and the incorporation of solar‑control glazing.

The study also included a quantitative analysis of operational hours with temperatures outside the target range (≤14°C and ≥26°C), providing the design team with key data for decision‑making.

The result is a building optimised from a passive design perspective, energy‑efficient and future‑ready, demonstrating how the combination of architecture and advanced simulation can enhance the performance and user experience of urban sports facilities.

ASHRAE 90.1 energy simulations for LEED certification

The new municipal headquarters in Estepona brings all city services together under one roof while catalysing the urban renewal of the town centre. Officially inaugurated on 10 March 2023, the 13,068 m², eight‑storey building (plus basement) also includes a 131‑space public car park—part of a wider strategy to streamline access and public services.

Our client was Castaño & Asociados, who acted as LEED AP assessors on the project. Praxis was commissioned to undertake the ASHRAE 90.1 energy simulations required for LEED certification, using DesignBuilder–EnergyPlus. Our scope covered baseline vs. proposed modelling, daylighting controls, HVAC and envelope parametrisation, iterative responses to the LEED Preliminary Review, and documentation for the certification submittal.

Working from design documents and manufacturer data, we developed calibrated models for both the Baseline (per ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G) and the Proposed building. The thermodynamic analysis tested envelope assemblies, glazing options and shading strategies—including a perforated metal double‑skin that tempers solar gains—together with balcony overhangs and a cool‑colour roof. On the active systems side, the proposed design featured high‑efficiency Swegon air‑handling units with rotary heat recovery (~84%); a VRF system with heat recovery and inverter compressors; and LED lighting with DALI daylight‑linked controls. We also modelled a 65.1 kWp rooftop PV array with an estimated annual yield of ~104 MWh, contributing a meaningful share of site electricity.

The modelling quantified how passive and active measures combine to reduce loads and operational energy: improved wall and glazing U‑values, the double‑skin façade and external overhangs mitigate summer gains, while winter solar access and airtightness limit heating demand; efficient heat‑recovery ventilation and VRF further cut space conditioning energy; and daylight‑responsive LED strategies lower lighting energy and internal gains. Our iterative submissions and narrative responses addressed reviewer comments on assemblies, lighting LPD distribution, daylight controls, outdoor air rates, secondary HVAC in assembly spaces, and baseline heat‑recovery provisions—ensuring that the final models reflected design intent and LEED methodology with full traceability.

The winery consists of two modules, one underground, where wine is aged, and another above ground, where tastings are held: a total of 290 m2 gross floor area.

Praxis has undertaken a thermodynamic and daylighting study of the buildings, using DesignBuilder (EnergyPlus & Radiance), assessing temperature and relative humidity conditions in the wine cellar and analysing the risk of summer overheating in the tasting room. The results have been used in the design of the thermal envelope. We’ve also designed the M & E systems: mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, space heating and cooling, hot water production, and off-grid solar PV with batteries and backup generator.

Praxis Resilient Buildings conducted a detailed thermodynamic simulation study to assess and optimise the thermal behaviour of a new sports hall in Vila-seca, Tarragona. Designed by architect Pere Buil of Vora Arquitectes, the building follows a mixed-mode, non-conditioned design approach relying on passive strategies for year-round comfort.

Using the IWEC II climate file for nearby Reus Airport and the EnergyPlus simulation engine, we analysed key envelope components and operational strategies. Natural ventilation, solar control glazing, roof surface properties, daylighting control, and slab insulation were all assessed under typical winter and summer conditions.

Key outcomes included:

  • Cross-ventilation and stack effect strategies delivering >20,000 m³/h airflow without mechanical assistance.
  • Passive cooling success: Indoor temperatures remained below outdoor peaks in summer.
  • Unexpected impact of slab insulation: Reduced beneficial subsoil heat transfer in winter.
  • Daylight-responsive lighting control reduced electricity demand by up to 90%.

Recommendations included skipping under-slab insulation, optimising solar protection with external shading (especially on northwest façades), maintaining 30 cm of roof insulation, and implementing a sensor-based Building Management System (BMS) for smart window operation.

The result is a set of passive design strategies that allow the Vilaseca sports hall to perform comfortably and efficiently without active cooling or heating — a reference model for resilient educational sports infrastructure in Catalonia.

Passivhaus consultancy for the Eco Hub, a pop-up learning hub in Castelldefels, Barcelona, designed by the Learnlife team, whose philosophy is to provide spaces that offer “a better way of learning, backed by science and research, that is learner-centred and focuses on self-determined, purpose-inspired and personal learning”.

Winner of the Green Solutions Awards 2022-2023 of Construction 21 Spain in the Low-tech Category, the Eco Hub consists of two prefabricated timber modules built by Tall Fusta and made from healthy and low environmental impact materials. Windows are made by Elke Wood Windows, with meranti frames and low-e argon filled double glazing. Each module is equipped with a Passivhaus certified Zehnder mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery, for optimum air quality.

Praxis has delivered the PHPP modelling, design of the thermal envelope and airtight layer, advice on low-impact materials, and analysis and optimisation of thermal bridges and construction detail, together with the design of the M & E systems: mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, space heating and cooling, hot water production, and solar PV.  Praxis has also undertaken the Blower Door testing and on-site Passivhaus supervision and quality control.
